MEMBERS of the Y’s Men’s Club are helping the Flinders Lodge with new curtains and nine fridges after “generous” donations from Port Pirie businesses.
“The donations have been overwhelming,” said member Peter Standen.
“It is an opportunity to make a difference.”
The club initially supplied small appliances to the Adelaide motel which is chiefly used as accommodation for families affected by cancer.
But, after discovering that instead of curtains, the lodge had just blankets pinned up over the windows, the club provided 18 rooms with new curtains via donations.
The club will close its fundraising appeal after the last nine fridges are bought.
The club itself has a personal connection with the lodge, as member Peter Bairstow and his wife Mary had previously stayed there when Mary was undergoing treatment for cancer.
The donations so far have totalled $5500.
Contributions have also come from the Y’s Men’s Clubs in Adelaide and Broken Hill.
The Greek community of Port Pirie raised enough money to buy a fridge for the project.
Once the donations have closed and the final fridges have been bought, the club will recognise major donors with certificates.
“Practically everyone was a major donor. Everyone came up with generous donations,” said Mr Standen.
