DENMAN rally driver Michael Valantine turned back the clock to taste success at Johns River at the weekend.
The MV Solar team enjoyed another triumphant outing, bringing home an outright win.
And, driver Valantine and navigator Ross Plunkett teamed up again after a 15-year break.
It seems the lengthy pause did not diminish their ability in the car – or their enthusiasm for tough competition.
“The scary thing is, I think he’s getting faster with age,” Plunkett said of his racing partner.
“What a great weekend; even with our usual problems of no intercom, lost Terratrip for two stages.
“I fell off the notes more than ever, there wasn’t much light for the night stages, and we endured a few late calls of (extreme caution hump, as we were launching off them).
“Yet, we still came out in first.”
Dennis Valantine was a valuable member of the team as support crew and the three certainly put in a huge effort to bring home the win.
Sadly, MV Solar’s second vehicle driven by Tim Valantine and Adam Burden did not fare so well.
They were unable to finish the rally due to mechanical issues.
The next challenge for the keen motor enthusiasts is the Classic Outback Trial in August, a very different but exciting event for the team.
It’s a week-long race staring in Parkes and finishing in Renmark, South Australia.
This time, Valantine is joining forces with his son, Tim.
“I did the Classic a few years ago with Peter Thompson,” the senior family member said.
“Unfortunately, we had navigational and mechanical problems; although I did set some fast stages.
“We’re unleashing a two-car team in 2014.
“I’m in one vehicle with Tim, while Peter [Thompson] will drive the other.”
And, Valantine’s goal is simple.
“We just want to finish,” he told the Chronicle.
“Since we have to cover more than 2000 kilometres, it’s an endurance race rather than a sprint.
“You really need to pace yourself a bit more.
“It can be gruelling – we pass a lot of outback stations, as well as forests.
“But, if everything goes well, we’ll give it a good shake.”
