CENTENARY: Local Red Cross members Derek and Beth Pearce with mayor Lindsay Brown showing off their centenary Red Cross Aprons ready for the Bunnings Red Cross barbecue ON August 13 one of the world’s largest humanitarian organisations will celebrate its centenary.
The Red Cross was formed nine days after the outbreak of World War I and local members and volunteers want to celebrate the milestone by thanking the community for its support.
South Coast zone representative of eight years Pam Hamory said although she would not be around in another 100 years, she hoped the Red Cross service still was.
“We want to thank the whole community for getting behind Red Cross,” Miss Hamory said.
“The generosity they have shown is truly heart warming.
“I think an organisation such as the Red Cross turning 100 is fantastic.”
Red Cross has a number of schemes within the local community that reach out to people that includes visiting lonely people in aged care facilities and providing Telechat, Telecross and Red Connect Personal Alarm services.
Running off only small grants, sponsorship, fundraising and the hard work of volunteers, the organisation serves the community through responding to large scale disasters to helping vulnerable children and supporting families facing personal crisis.
“We help people and are always there,” Miss Hamroy said.
“Our projects are funded mostly through fundraising.
“We don’t jump up and down, we stay behind the scenes but when something happens you know were we are.”
Miss Hamroy encouraged anyone who was interested in becoming a member of the Red Cross to sign up.
“It’s only $5 a year and we would love to grow our volunteer network,” she said.
On Saturday, August 9 Red Cross volunteers will fire up the barbecue at Batemans Bay Bunnings to celebrate the past 100 years of success and raise money for the local branch of the organisation.
“Everything and I mean absolutely everything has been donated by Bunnings for the barbecue,” Miss Hamroy said.
“Bunnings have been so supportive.”
