LEGISLATION creating a no-smoking zone within 10 metres of children’s play equipment came into effect on April 1 this year.
Yet every time I’m at Bendigo’s Fun Loong playground in Pall Mall, with my two-year-old son, it’s almost guaranteed that there will multiple people smoking well within the 10 metres.
Most of the culprits are young teenagers, who when asked to move on claim ignorance of the law change or are simply indifferent to the fact their poisonous smoke is drifting into the lungs of young toddlers.
I ask that Bendigo council make some effort to enforce this zone, with a council officer issuing $144 on-the-spot fines, or at the very least improve the signage and paint on a thick permanent red line clearly marking the 10-metre zone.
Bendigo has done well improving the Pall Mall for families.
Keep up this good work and ensure Bendigo’s CBD is as child friendly as possible.
