BOCCIA: The Australian Paralympic Committee is bringing a ‘come and try’ boccia session to Whyalla on Wednesday, August 20.

The Australian Paralympic Committee is bringing boccia to Whyalla with a ‘come and try’ session on Wednesday, August 20.

The session will be held at the Whyalla Health and Leisure Centre and run from 5pm until 7pm.

Australian Paralympic Committee development officer Emily Ayles said boccia was a sport for people with a high level of physical impairment.

“Boccia is a skillful, exciting and strategic sport that was developed specifically to cater to people with varying levels of physical impairment,” she said.

“Boccia is a truly inclusive sport that can be enjoyed by all.”

Ms Ayles will run the session on behalf of Boccia South Australia and said she encouraged everyone to try boccia.

“Boccia is a fantastic inclusive sport, which provides pathways to Paralympic competition for athletes with a disability,” she said.

“Anyone can attend the come and try event; doesn’t matter what ability, or disability.”

Ms Ayles said the session was the result of funding from the Coca-Cola Australia Foundation.

“We’re very excited to be able to bring boccia to regional South Australia thanks to the support of the Coca Cola ‘Get Involved’ funding initiative,” she said.

Ms Ayles said she hoped the session would get the ball rolling with an eye to forming a boccia club in the Whyalla region.

“Boccia is a relatively new sport in SA, and is gaining momentum with Australia increasing its presence on the world stage,” she said.

“There are currently four clubs across Adelaide, and we are looking at forming a club in Whyalla/Port Augusta.”

Ms Ayles said the session would be completely free with all equipment provided.
